Supporting Business Owner’s Ambition to Expand
This specialist underground services company had been operating for around seven years and the owner had ambitions to expand. The owner moved himself and a trusted employee off the tools and into management positions but they were struggling to know what to do and the business was not generating sufficient profit to accommodate the shift.
Actions Taken
Stuart Carr worked closely with the owner to define the structure and strategy for moving the company forward.
- The first step, understanding the strengths of the business and the skills and motivations of key personnel.
- Next, defining the managerial roles: the owner/managing director was assigned the business development and relationship management functions and his 2IC became the operations manager.
- Stuart continued working with the managers to define the team structure and processes.
- With the organisational structure in place, Stuart helped draft a strategic plan which they took to the staff for consultation.
Results
The company has won several large contracts and sales have increased by around 50% in just one year. Stuart continues to work with the company offering support in submitting government tenders and in ISO 9001 implementation. He provides a general sounding board for all their major decision-making.
